Essential Excel Skills Every Career Changer Needs to Know.

There are hundreds of Excel concepts, and it can be challenging to decipher which ones to study. Perhaps, you spend time going down a fruitless rabbit hole and must go back to square one.

Luckily for you—this is your square one. I have collected what I consider the essential items you will need to know day one of your first corporate role.

If you already have a job that uses Excel, these concepts will build on your existing skills or introduce new functions for analyzing data that you may not have used before as well.

The purpose of this series of blog posts is to share the essential Excel techniques and skills required to succeed in the corporate world. Think of this blog series as a crash course you can steal from, so you do not have to do the research on your own. I know there are many sites and courses available online. In fact, I have spent hundreds of hours learning from the sites and searching concepts online via Google, Reddit, Stack Overflow, etc. This means I will save you the time by not drudging through the internet. Instead, let me be your mentor in this process because I know you do not have endless time in your day.

These blog posts can be read in bite-sized pieces to learn on your own time. However, it is important just to begin learning one day at a time. The day is now.

The concepts discussed in this blog series are intended for individuals who have little to no skill or background in Excel. After reading through these blog posts, you will have more confidence in Excel, and, hopefully, use this blog series as a springboard to continue your Excel learning journey.

The concepts you will learn are skills I have used in my career as both a data analyst and business analyst, so we can cut through filler concepts that are not necessary that courses and training sites add to their syllabi just to increase the volume of their curriculum.

Here I take the approach of quality over quantity.

Here are the concepts I will cover in this series of blog posts:

  • Data Cleaning

  • Tables

  • Pivot Tables

  • Lookup Functions5

  • Logical Functions

  • Data Analysis

  • Data Visualization

Let us dig in now with Blog #1: Data Cleaning.

It can be tough to learn online and decipher technological jargon most websites use just to sound more credible. I am not saying I will not use corporate jargon here and there. However, everything in this site is from real world experience. This means, when I use terms like rollups or aggregations, I will define the terms in easy-to-understand everyday language to help you retain the information.

Everyone is on their own journey in life. I want to help you learn and get confidence to keep growing and learning. You are already on the right track by being here at UPskill Network.
